01What it is
The Parco della Montagnola is the oldest public park in Bologna, on a mound at the north end of via dell'Indipendenza. The mound is largely man-made — built up over centuries from rubble, including the ruins of a papal fortress that the Bolognese repeatedly pulled down.
02The Pincio stair
From the street, a monumental stair of the 1890s climbs the side of the hill in double ramps, with a fountain and sculpture at its center. It is called the Scalinata del Pincio, after the Pincio in Rome.
038 August 1848
On the square below, on 8 August 1848, the people of Bologna fought off Austrian troops, and the square and a monument in the park are named for the day.
04How to use it
It is a neighborhood park rather than a manicured garden, with shade, benches and a fountain, and it is a good pause between the station and the center.
